About this role
Role Overview
Apply your legal judgment to help frontier AI models perform substantive legal work more accurately. You will work closely with an AI lab''s research and program management teams, translating real-world legal practice into high-quality tasks, standards, and evaluations.
This role is designed for practising legal specialists at counsel or senior associate level. It is not intended for early-career lawyers, partners, or General Counsel-level candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Review legal knowledge-work tasks and model outputs, identifying missing behaviors, weak reasoning, and answers that would not meet professional legal standards.
- Write instruction specifications and model solutions that establish accurate standards for legal problem-solving.
- Create legal tasks, benchmarks, and evaluation sets that reflect actual legal practice and measure model improvement.
- Help develop legal-specific skills and tools with the research team.
- Collaborate with researchers and adjacent-domain specialists to calibrate standards and turn professional legal judgment into clear, teachable criteria.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school, with a highly ranked institution strongly preferred.
- 8 to 15 years of substantive post-qualification legal practice at an established law firm, corporate legal department, regulatory body, or court. Internships and clerkships alone do not qualify.
- Current or prior experience as counsel, senior associate, senior in-house counsel, or Assistant General Counsel, including meaningful ownership of legal matters.
- Specialization in at least one substantive practice area, such as corporate and transactional law, litigation and dispute resolution, regulatory and compliance, intellectual property, employment and labor, or tax.
- Admission to at least one U.S. state bar and good standing.
- Hands-on professional use of large language models and the ability to distinguish sound legal reasoning from plausible but incorrect responses.
- Excellent written communication and the ability to provide precise, well-structured feedback.
Work Terms
- Full-time W-2 employment, with placement on an AI lab''s extended workforce.
- 40 hours per week for an initial 6-month engagement.
- Hybrid position based in the Bay Area, California. You must work on-site with the client team multiple days per week when required.
- This is not a remote role. Candidates who do not currently live in the Bay Area must relocate at their own expense before the engagement begins; relocation assistance is not available.
- Client-issued accounts and equipment will be provided, and work will take place in the client''s tools alongside its research teams.
- This is a structured, role-based position integrated with the client''s internal team and enterprise workflows, rather than a freelance or project-based engagement.
Compensation
$85 to $120 per hour.
Eligibility and Equal Opportunity
Qualified applicants are considered without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, sex, pregnancy or related medical conditions, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, protected-veteran status, disability, genetic information, political views or activity, or any other legally protected characteristic. Reasonable accommodations are available for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans throughout the application process.
